Recently I had the pleasure and honor to do an engagement shoot for my friends Mary Kate and Joe. We had a lot of fun shooting on the beach and up at Tantalus but more importantly, I loved hearing about their story of how they met.
How did you meet?
Joe had just completed his first year as the Assistant Swim coach at the University of Hawaii. He was coaching the morning masters swim team over the summer. Mary Kate recently accepted a job at Dolphin Quest as a dolphin trainer and was excited to start swimming with the masters swim team she had swam with all through college.
Rewind to April and go back to San Diego, Mary Kate’s friend Ellie was persistent in trying to convince her that the new coach at UH and her would be perfect for each other. Mary Kate wanted little to do with the idea and forgot the conversation between her and Ellie had ever happened.
Fast forward to June 11, 2014 Mary Kate returns to her masters swim team that morning while Joe coached the practice, Mary Kate had no idea Joe was the man her fiend had tried to set her up with.
After about a month of talking on the pool deck, Mary Kate and Joe became facebook friends. Joe and her started to converse more and more as they both learned they had many of the same interest. It was not until Mary Kate saw a photo of Joe that caught her eye. “Why is this so familiar? Where is this from” Then it dawned on her, she checked her passed phone conversation with her friend Ellie, that was it! The connection was made.
Why did you choose the locations we shot at?
Exactly one year to the day the pair first met Joe proposed to Mary Kate at spitting caves while watching the sunset.
Two months after meeting Joe and Mary Kate went on there first and shortly after a second date. The second date was at Cromwells beach where the couple shared their first kiss while seeking shelter from the sudden rain.
The pair chose to also take photos at Tantalus because it over looks the city they met in and spent a majority of their time exploring and trying new thing together.
